Editor’s Corner

A cup of tea for your soul. (With murder!) Okamoto published 68 Hanshichi stories between 1917 and 1937 and we are honored to adapt them all. His tales are less whodunnit... and more like calming, thought-provoking walks through Tokyo (where people kill people.)

In this modern adaptation of Okamoto Kido's detective classic —Japan's first mystery series, written by the son of a samurai— a retired detective in old Tokyo starts asking questions, and learns that some names are kept quiet for a reason.

Over seven days, told through Hans' texts to a young detective-in-training, the story follows his quiet investigation through temple lanes and tea rooms, old records and older silences, toward a koi pond in a family garden that no one will go near.

Adapted from the first Inspector Hanshichi detective story by Okamoto Kido (1917) and set in modern Tokyo. The first in our series of Curious Casebook stories. A true gem, like a warm cup of tea in your hand.

Day 1Day 2Day 3Day 4

Michi just sent me a message. Haru screamed again tonight. Fumi, Fumi, Fumi.

But this time, when Michi ran to the tatami room, the sliding door to the garden was open.

She is certain she closed it.
