a novella in your pocket; for the bibliomaniacs!

She went into the back bedroom and closed the door. I went to the door immediately. I pressed myself flat on the floor and put my ear to the gap between the door and the hardwood. She was talking. Not to me, not to anyone in the house. Into her telephone. Her voice was low, the way people speak when they do not want to be heard, which is the way people speak when they should be heard most of all. "...yeah, she's gone for two weeks..." "...there's way more here than I thought..." "...no, it's fine, literally just a cat, she's not a problem..."

She said I am not a problem.

She is dangerously incorrect.
